На днешния ден отбелязваме 9 май – Ден на Европа. На 9 май 1950 г. е направена първата стъпка към създаването на Европейския съюз, като в Париж, френският министър на външните работи Робер Шуман прочита пред международната преса декларация, в която се призовават Франция, Германия и други европейски страни да обединят производството си на въглища и стомана като „първа стъпка към европейска федерация“. Затова на срещата на лидерите на ЕС в Милано през 1985 г. е взето решение 9 май да се чества като „Ден на Европа“.
